The top 10 reasons to spay or neuter your pet were killed at a shelter this morning.
Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation, ensuring that every pet has a family to love them.
Overpopulation isn’t the only issue, however. Many pet owners decide against spaying or neutering their pet because they feel the pet will not be accidentally bred. That may be the case, but every single cat and every single dog has an alarmingly high chance of developing cancers in the uterus, testicles and mammary glands.
There is a disease called pyometra. It is an often lethal infection of the uterus in both cats and dogs. It can happen at ANY AGE, whether she had been bred or not. No female pet is safe from pyometra, unless she is SPAYED. The only way to be rid of the infection once it has occurred is to remove the entire uterus. It is a dangerous operation because of the infection, and costs more than twice the amount of a general spay. Sometimes, the dog or cat is so weak from infection, she doesn’t even make it.
Spaying and neutering won’t only prolong the health and life of your furry friends, but drastically reduce aggression and roaming instincts, turning that spitting and spraying tomcat into a purring lapcat.
IT IS A MYTH that spaying and neutering will cause your pet to become fat. Lack of exercise and overfeeding are those culprits.
We all care very deeply for our animals, but what we don’t know WILL cost us dearly.
The cost of an average spay is a ONE TIME cost around 400-500$. A neuter is 300-400$. Without the surgery, an animal will accrue THOUSANDS in veterinary bills once they fall sick to infections and cancers, that could have been easily avoided. They will also destroy property with marking, or keep you up at night with yowling.
If you cannot afford the cost, there are many programs across the US and Canada that offer subsidized pet care, and many clinics offer payment plans.
Please, for the health and prosperity of our cherished pets, Spay and Neuter.
